2007-09-26 [Cadet]: Could it really be considered a monopoly though? I mean people subscribe to those so it's not like it's wiping out the entire radio...people still have a choice.
2007-09-27 [Molly Louise]: Yes it is considered a monopoly because there will be no other satellite radio stations to keep the giants in check. Sirius and XM keep each other in balance because they're separate. Put them together, it will be like Standard Oil back in the early 1900's.
2007-09-27 [Cadet]: I say let it happen, if people want to have to pay to listen to the radio then that's their choice, i don't see why XM and Sirius are necessary anyway.
2007-09-27 [Molly Louise]: More music, less commercials, more variety, and they have Howard Stern (which is not saying that I'm a Howard Stern fan). And you pay yearly. People aren't going to want to pay jacked prices.
2007-09-28 [Cadet]: Why should people even have to pay for radio anyway? I'm sorry but to me that seems ridiculous.
2007-10-01 [Molly Louise]: There's no commercials and such a selection of stations. It's awesome. It's not so much a station of advertisements and little music, but more music than anything else. Seriously awesome, but if they're going to merge, that would be bad. It would be a monopoly.
2007-10-07 [Molly Louise]: There's patience and then there's needless free market advertising that takes up a majority of the airwaves on radio stations that say "commercial free music coming your way after these messages." Look at the internet business for a comparison. High speed, faster and better that dial-up. Less waiting. In the fast paced world we live in, people don't always like to wait.
2007-10-09 Vishous Bloodletter: I can't say how this will turn out, b/c there will still be a lot of people that can't afford to pay for broadcasting. But on the other hand, you can't just look at how it may or may not play out, you have to look at the legal side of things. It is illegal for big companies to join, b/c they would probably create a monopoly eventually which is illegal. We've recently broken up the oil-companies b/c they were creating a monopoly. How is it fair that the gvt can break up one, but not another??
2007-10-14 [Molly Louise]: Exactly.
